Neural Foraminal Stenosis: Definition

The neural foramina are the small openings between the vertebrae of the spine where the nerve roots from the spinal cord exit. A nerve root is the nerve fiber bundle that comes off from the spinal cord. Stenosis, also known as narrowing, can sometimes compress these nerve roots that are exiting the neural foramina. This can potentially cause pain, numbness, or weakness.
