Annular Fissure: Definition

Annular Fissure or Tear

An annular fissure or tear is a deficiency in the annulus fibrosis, which is the tough exterior surrounding the gel filled center of the intervertebral disc. Natural degeneration from aging is a common cause of annular tears. If the tear is large enough, it can result in a disc herniation, in which the gel filled center (nucleus) spills into the canal.

Also known as: annular tear.
