Disc Herniation: Definition

Herniated Disc

A disc herniation occurs when the jelly-like center of the intervertebral disc spills into the canal. This occurs when the fibrous outer layer (annulus) which surrounds the jelly-like center (nucleus) tears or breaks. Herniations can spill into various parts of the spinal canal and may cause pain, numbness, or weakness.

Also known as: herniated disc, disc extrusion
